Instant Pot Duo vs. Viva : Which is better?

Few people understood about the benefits of a multifunctional pressure cooker like an Instant Pot, thus they were formerly a well-kept secret. The advantages of using an Instant Pot – speed, convenience of use, and the ability to cook frozen ingredients — are now well-known, and many people have discovered what Instant Pots have to offer. If you're looking for an Instant Pot, you have a lot of options when it comes to the model to choose. You can choose between a tried-and-true model like the Duo and one of Instant Pot's more recent offerings, such as the Instant Pot Viva. Which is the superior option? To discover out, we pit the Instant Pot Duo against the Viva in a side-by-side comparison.

A new lid and colour options have been added to the design.

The two pots would look remarkably similar if you put a six-quart Instant Pot Duo next to a six-quart stainless steel Instant Pot Viva. So much so that it may be difficult to tell the two pots apart at first glance. However, there are significant design distinctions that distinguish them.

First, in addition to the 6-quart and 8-quart sizes, the Instant Pot Duo is available in a 3-quart tiny version. The Viva is only available in 6- or 8-quart sizes; there is no 3-quart model. Aside from basic stainless steel, the Viva is available in a variety of colours. Colors such as black, blue, cinnamon, and copper can be found on the lid or body. The Duo was originally only available in stainless steel, but it is now available in a variety of colours and styles, including red, teal, and several Star Wars editions. The Duo, on the other hand, does not have as many colour options as the Viva.

The Viva has a new lid design that is different from the Duo. Cooking is made easier with the Viva's lid's auto-seal and quick-steam release capabilities. The displays on each pot are also distinct, with the Viva's display being slightly more current than the older Duo's.

Sous vide and other features

The Instant Pot Viva is a 9-in-1 pressure cooker, sauté pan, slow cooker, rice cooker, food warmer, yoghurt maker, cake maker, stockpot, steamer, and sous vide machine all in one.

The Instant Pot Duo is a seven-in-one pressure cooker that can be used as a pressure cooker, a sauté pan, a steamer, a slow cooker, a rice cooker, a food warmer, or a yoghurt maker.

The following cooking programmes are available in both pots:

  • Soup\sMeat/Stew\sBean/Chili\sPoultry\sSauté/Simmer\sRice\sMultigrain\sPorridge
  • Slow Cooking Using Steam
  • Keep Yogurt Warm Using Manual Pressure Cook

The Instant Pot Duo, on the other hand, lacks these programmes, which are present on the Viva:

  • Sous vide means "under vacuum."
  • Sterilize\sCake\sEgg

Performance

When it comes to pressure cooking, steaming, and slow cooking, both the Duo and the Viva excel. You can create all of the standard fare — shredded chicken, steamed vegetables, pot roast, chilli, and even cheesecake — and your dish will turn out beautifully in either pot. When it comes to pressure cooking, the Pots are quite comparable, with the exception that the Viva's lid modifications may make it significantly easier to operate for beginners. On the Viva, the sterilising option is also useful. You can sterilise in any Instant Pot, but without the time and temperature criteria put in, it's difficult to know if all of those germs have been eradicated. As a result, the Viva may be a better sterilisation pot solely because it has that preset.

Recipes for eggs and cake may be slightly easier in the Viva, given that it already has those apps installed. You may still create those recipes in the Duo, and they won't taste any different as long as the time and temperature settings are correct. The Viva is certainly the better choice if you're searching for a pot to create sous vide dishes with. Without such programme, preparing sous vide dishes in the Duo will be considerably more difficult.

Price

The price of Instant Pots has dropped dramatically across the board. It used to be difficult to get a 6- or 8-quart model for less than $100 a few years ago. The six-quart Viva was initially $120, but it is frequently on sale for $50 to $80. The Duo (six-quart) costs $100 at full price, although it's regularly on sale for $50 to $80.

Which is the superior option?

The Viva includes more feature upgrades than the Duo, making it the more flexible and cost-effective option. However, because the Duo is one of the most popular Instant Pot models, most recipes and accessories for the Instant Pot are developed for it. The Duo is the superior option if you're ready to give up a few features in exchange for a tried-and-true model with more user support (think recipes, comments, etc.). Choose the Viva if you just want the greatest Instant Pot for the money in terms of features.
